Down in their hearts, wise men know this truth: the only way to help yourself is to help others.

Make a Difference Today!
It Just Takes a Few Minutes >
There are lots of ways to make a difference in people's lives. Take a few
minutes today to look beyond your own situation and see if you can help
someone else. Even if you don't have any money, you CAN make a
difference by visiting some of the Internet's "click to donate" sites. If you
do have some funds to spare, check out some of my favorite charities.
I'd love to hear from you about these or other options, so shoot me an
email.
Click to Donate Sites
Seriously, all you do is click on the above logos link and the revenue
from sponsors is donated to various groups. It only takes a moment and
it's FREE. If you too many sites are frustrating to juggle, you can go to
Daily Charity and the site will click for you!
Other Options
Kiva.org This is my favorite charity, and
honestly, I guess it can't rightfully be
classified as a charity because you get
your money back. Intrigued? I thought
you would be! Kiva.org shows you
entrepreneurs in developing countries
who need a loan in order to start or
expand their businesses. The borrowers
pay back your money and then you have
the option of either re-lending those
funds or withdrawing them. The
repayment rate is over 99%, so it's highly
likely you will get your money back.
You also get monthly notices when your
borrowers make their payments, and
sometimes you'll get journal entries
detailing the progress they've made
because of your loan. It's awesome, and
it's particularly good for kids. I
recommend you lend $25 (the lowest
amount you can do). You can check out
our loans here, if you're interested.
Women for Women International This
organization lets you sponsor a woman who's
been a victim of war. Your monthly donation
of $27 provides your Women for Women
"sister" with basic necessities, rights
awareness training, leadership education,
and vocational skills. The program lasts for
one year, during which time you exchange
letters with your sister every month. You can
also send her photos, bookmarks or
stickers--little things that don't weigh a lot.
My "sister", Regina, is a widow from Nigeria.
She had eight children, but three of them are
dead. She has no water or electricity in her
home. She has to use a kerosene lamp for
light and draws her water from a river. She
has never before had access to education
and does not know how to read or write
anything beyond her own name. (The
Women for Women field workers read my
letters to her and write hers to me.)
I love this program and encourage you to
check it out if you have the means.

Central Asia Institute This the is organization
detailed in the book Three Cups of Tea, which I
highly recommend. Mountain climber Greg
Mortenson becomes lost after an attempt at K2.
He stumbles into a village, where he is cared for
and nursed back to health. To repay the
kindness of the villagers, he promises to build
them a school. That promise becomes an
adventure, then a life's calling.
Mortenson has now built 58 schools in
Afghanistan and Pakistan. The schools, which
educate mostly girls, work against terrorism by
providing the area's children with a moderate
education that shows them there is a world out
there beyond what is offered to them by
fundamentalists.
